【福岡／観光名所】香椎宮／仲哀天皇と神功皇后を祀る古代の霊廟 - Kashii-gu Shrine in FUKUOKA, JAPAN -

香椎宮は、福岡県福岡市北部の立花山南西麓に鎮座する古社。古代には、仲哀天皇と神功皇后の霊廟として「香椎廟」と呼ばれていました。しかし、平安時代中頃からは神社化していき、他に類のない変遷を辿っています。 記紀によると、仲哀天皇は熊襲征伐のため筑紫まで遠征し、仲哀天皇9年（200年）に同地で崩御します。そこで神功皇后が、仲哀天皇の御霊を祀ったことが起源とされています。その後、神功皇后に神託があり朝廷により神亀元年（724年）に神功皇后廟が創建されました。この両宮を併せて香椎廟と称しました。このような経緯から長らく“香椎廟”と呼ばれ、神社や神宮の名を冠することはありませんでした。 香椎という地名は、仲哀天皇の棺を立て掛けた椎の木から良い香りが漂ってきたことに由来します。現在でも「古宮」として橿日宮跡が残り、そこに棺懸の椎があります。 また、境内には綾杉という御神木があります。神功皇后が剣・鉾・杖の三種の宝を埋め、そこに杉枝を「永遠に本朝を鎮護すべし」と祈って埋めたのが始まりと伝わります。葉の形状が綾紋のようであったので綾杉と名が付いたとされます。国家鎮護の象徴として古来よりその杉葉を宮中に献上しています。 勅祭社／重要文化財／福岡県福岡市東区 ____________________________________________________ Kashi-gu Shrine is located at the southwestern foot of Mt. Tachibana in the northern part of Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. In ancient times, the shrine was called "Kashii-byo" as the mausoleum of Emperor Chuai and Empress Jingu. However, since the middle of the Heian period, it has been transformed into a shrine, and has undergone a unique transformation. According to the Chronicles, Emperor Chuai made an expedition to Tsukushi to subdue Kumaso, and died there in 200. It is said that Empress Jingu enshrined the spirit of Emperor Chuai there. After that, Empress Jingu received an oracle and the imperial court built the Mausoleum of Empress Jingu in 724. The two shrines together were called Kashii-byo. Because of this, the shrine was called "Kashi-byo" for a long time, and never bore the name of a shrine. The place name Kashii comes from the pleasant fragrance that wafted from the chinquapin tree on which Emperor Chuai's coffin was propped. Even now, the site of Kasahinomiya remains as the 'old palace', and there is a coffin hanger chinquapin there. There is also a sacred tree called Aya cedar in the precincts of the shrine. Empress Jingu buried the three treasures of a sword, a halberd, and a cane, and buried cedar there, praying that she should protect the imperial court forever. It is said that the name Ayasugi was given because the shape of the leaves resembled a twill pattern. Since ancient times, the cedar leaves have been presented to the imperial court as a symbol of protection of the nation.
