大和神社 〜 シイネツヒコの功 〜

During Golden Week, I visited the Yamanobe-no-michi trail and paid my respects at Yamato Shrine. Yamato Shrine, along with Omiwa Shrine and Isonokami Shrine, is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Japan. The deity enshrined there, Nihon-Ōkunitama-Ōkami, was brought to the outside of the imperial palace by Emperor Sujin. At first glance, this deity might seem like a god that causes curses, but upon closer examination, it becomes clear that this is also a kind-hearted god who helped Emperor Sujin, who was troubled by plagues and the dispersal and rebellion of his people, through divine messages in dreams and in various other ways. Nihon-Ōkunitama-Ōkami is a god who hid himself with the Heavenly Reverse Spear—that is, a god with a strict side who judges those who defy the teachings of the To and guides them to the To teachings. However, after reading the Hotsuma Tsutae and *Nihon Shoki*, I realized that this god also has a gentle side, offering advice to save rulers (emperors) who are bewildered and terrified by situations beyond their control. This video features Shiinetsuhiko, the ancestor of Shinagaoichi, a figure who was favored by the great Japanese deity, Nihon Okunitama-no-Okami.
