Why He Drives a 60 Year Old Volvo in NYC
I met Jared through my close friend Mario after taking a random production assistant job on a Maybelline shoot. I had no clue what I was doing. My first task was to grab coffee. When I came back, Jared asked for the receipt and I told him, “I don’t have it.” I was completely out of my depth. Everything was new to me, and I was learning from the ground up. Jared could’ve easily lost patience, but he never did. What started with coffee runs slowly turned into more. I helped build sets, paint backdrops, arrange flower bouquets in his studio, and eventually he trusted me enough to drive his Sprinter through the city. Somewhere along the way, we became friends. A couple years into knowing Jared, I found out he had a Volvo from the 60s. From that point on, we had something else to bond over. Cars became another language between us. When Seung and I started Except Sundays, I realized how much I had carried with me from those years around Jared. The way he handled problems, the way he stayed steady when everything got hectic, the way he always figured it out. I’ve wanted to make something about Jared for a long time. I just felt like we needed a little more time before we were ready to do it properly. After a lot of mistakes, growth, and a few forgotten receipts, it feels right to finally share his story.
