Being a car guy in NYC makes no sense
형 (Hyung) is a Korean word used by males to address an older male they’re close to, like an older brother or close older friend. Not all of us were taught cars at home. A lot of us have parents who never really understand the obsession, so we find our influences somewhere else. For Andy, that was the streets of Brooklyn in the 90s, Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Marine Park. The older guys in the neighborhood (his hyungs) took him under their wing. They brought him along for moments he’d never forget, like ripping down the Deegan in an IROC-Z. It didn’t take long before Andy was hooked for good. The journey of being a car guy in New York City wasn’t easy. There were plenty of mistakes, and moments where he thought he was done with cars for good. But once life settled down with marriage and kids, the itch came back. He bought an E30 M3 and spent the next 15+ years building it, piece by piece, exactly to his taste. And somewhere along the way, Andy became the hyung. I met Andy randomly on the street while driving. He pulled up next to me, rolled his window down, and yelled, “I HAVE THE SAME CAR AS YOURS" (he also had an E30 Touring at the time). We exchanged info, and a few hours later, we were eating lunch together. At the time, I had just left my corporate job and was unsure about everything I was doing. Andy was one of the first people who really believed in us and in this channel. He kept pushing us forward, brought us into rooms and experiences we didn’t think we had access to, and gave us advice, confidence, and car parts when we needed it most. When he started his S54 swap, we didn’t really know how to tell a story. We filmed everything, but ended up sitting on the footage for over a year because we couldn’t figure out how to put it together. The closer we got to him, the more we started to understand that this wasn’t just about the car, it was about who he had become and how he got there. So we put a mic on him and talked about everything. Where it started, the mistakes he made in his 20s, and how those experiences shaped him into the person he is today. Car culture is cyclical. We’re all influenced by someone before us, and whether we realize it or not, we eventually become that person for someone else. This video is for the hyungs who took care of us, brought us along, and paved the way. One day, we hope to be that for someone else too.
