What are the physiological and psychological benefits of fasting? Since fasting involves abstaining from food, water, and sexual intercourse from dawn to sunset, that is, until the sun has completely set, it should be understood that the stomach is the main carrier of diseases and ailments in the body. This is why our beloved Prophet ﷺ said, as reported in Sunan Ibn Majah, Volume 4, Book of Nutrition, Hadith 3349, that the son of Adam did not fill a vessel worse than his own stomach. A few morsels of food are enough for a person to stand on his feet. But if he desires more, then let one-third of his stomach be for food, one-third for water, and one-third for ease of breathing. It should be understood that diseases primarily originate in the stomach, as it is a breeding ground for bacteria. Our food enters the stomach, is then digested, and moves to the intestines, from where nutrients enter the bloodstream and are distributed throughout the body. It is important to understand that the stomach works continuously throughout our entire lives. It never rests. When we fast, the stomach—which is a very sensitive organ (but despite its sensitivity, it's a very complex organ)—is sensitive, but it works hard all day. So when we fast, and food doesn't enter the stomach for several hours, it rests, and toxins are eliminated from the body, a cleansing process occurs. Therefore, fasting has a beneficial effect on the body physiologically, as it eliminates toxins and helps eliminate many illnesses. And what about the psychological impact? How does it affect a person's psyche, if we're talking about fasting? I think this is also very important. From a psychological perspective, fasting helps develop patience, endurance, and self-control. Fasting helps a person gain self-control, improve reflex function, and at the same time develop a receptivity to self-development and self-discipline. The main benefit of fasting is improving patience and endurance. A fasting person can learn to achieve goals that previously seemed inaccessible. Fasting stimulates the heart, body, mind, and soul. Fasting improves the overall well-being of the human body. Fasting even helps change behavior, and changing behavior is not easy. It is very difficult to unlearn a person who has already developed certain habits. That is why we say that the best jihad is jihad against oneself, that is, the desire to overcome oneself—this is perhaps the most difficult task, which fasting helps us cope with. And since jihad on the battlefield is also of great importance (should such a need arise), how can a person incapable of waging jihad against himself (that is, incapable of taming his ego) achieve victory over his enemy? In this regard, fasting plays a vital role. Therefore, fasting became obligatory even before jihad. Fasting became obligatory 15 years after the first revelation to the Prophet, in the second year after the Hijrah. And already the following year (a year later), jihad was declared obligatory. Thus, Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, first wanted to prepare Muslims psychologically through fasting. Then, after this psychological preparation, participation in military operations (qital) became mandatory. Usually, a person eats three times a day, for a total of 21 meals a week. But during fasting, this routine, and behavioral patterns regarding eating, are reduced to two meals a day – a light dinner in the late evening or at sunset, and breakfast at dawn. This entire routine changes, which has a beneficial effect on various psychological aspects and inner preparation. Psychologists today claim that if you can control your hunger, you can control almost all your impulses and cravings.
