About some studies on fasting Let's move on to the next question, regarding scientific evidence of the benefits of fasting. Some people claim (and I'd like to see this for myself) that fasting can have negative consequences, both physical, psychological, social, and so on. Is this really true? Scientists have already conducted several studies on various aspects of the effects of fasting on the human body. Scientists claim that eating speeds up the body's metabolism. When food intake decreases, or when we fast, the body's metabolic rate drops by 22%. If you continue fasting for several days or even months, it stabilizes at a low level. Therefore, fasting reduces the metabolic rate. At the same time, a study was conducted involving several groups of Muslims (both men and women) who were fasting. The results showed a slight decrease in body weight, but elevated blood sugar levels were observed. Other indicators remained unchanged, including testosterone and cortisone levels, sodium, potassium, urea, cholesterol—whether high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, or triglyceride levels… all of these indicators remained unchanged. Fasting had no effect on their levels, except for elevated blood sugar and slight weight loss. Another study was conducted in Iran, in which a participant fasted for 17 hours a day for 30 days, during the month of Ramadan. The study confirmed that fasting had no effect on levels of the male sex hormone testosterone. No changes were also observed in hypothalamic-pituitary axis parameters or thyroid hormone levels. Several studies have been conducted. One study, "Increased Oxidation During Ramadan in Healthy Women as a Method for Maintaining Body Weight," found that no changes in weight were observed during fasting, nor were any changes in body physiology (weight and function). Fasting increases fat oxidation and decreases carbohydrate oxidation. Western doctors should consider this as a marker for bilirubin and blood sugar levels during fasting. Another study showed that fasting increases the mucosal cell response to B-lymphocytes, although this study failed to detect a B-lymphocyte response to rheumatoid arthritis among the study participants. Fasting increases lifespan and the lifespan of the body. Numerous animal experiments have shown that fasting increases lifespan. Studies were also conducted on breastfeeding women during fasting. Fasting did not cause a decrease or increase in breast milk production. No changes were observed. The same was true for the composition of breast milk: the sugar content remained unchanged, the fat concentration remained unchanged, and the lactose content remained unchanged. In other words, fasting did not cause any changes in breastfeeding mothers in general. Studies were also conducted on women during their menstrual periods and during their reproductive cycle, and the results showed no changes. My menstrual cycle did not change during fasting, either for the worse or for the better. Therefore, it is a mistake to claim that fasting has any adverse effects. There are many beneficial properties, which we have already discussed.
