[4K] 🇧🇷 Rio de Janeiro Trams | VLT Carioca & Bonde Santa Teresa

Rio de Janeiro is one of the few cities in South America to operate a tram system. The modern VLT Carioca opened in 2016 and operates 4 lines over 28 kilometers of track in downtown Rio. It uses typical Alstom Citadis trams found in many systems around Europe, and unusually doesn’t use regular catenary for power. There is a third rail between the 2 regular tracks that is used for power across the whole system. The fares are cheaper than the subway at R$4.30, and they use the same transit card. There is also the Bonde de Santa Teresa, a historic tram line that runs from the city center into the Santa Teresa neighbourhood. In order to ride the heritage tram, you have to reserve tickets in advance, and a round trip costs R$20.00. The modern VLT is integrated pretty well with the other transit modes in the city, connecting to the metro at multiple stations, the central railway station, and the city’s BRT system. It connects one of the city’s international airports, and I recommend you use it if it’s to your convenience.
