This is the story of the revolutionary Mark 16 cannon, developed in response to the humiliating defeats of American cruisers in the night battles of the Solomon Islands in 1942. American engineers created the world's first 203mm automatic naval gun, capable of firing 10 rounds per minute, three times faster than any previous gun of its class. Mounted on Des Moines-class cruisers, this weapon never saw action in the war for which it was designed, but its sole surviving ship, the USS Salem, remains a museum in Quincy, Massachusetts.
