Why were warships painted like zebras? In 1917, when German U-boats were sinking 13 ships a day and Britain was on the brink of famine, a marine painter came up with the strangest idea in the history of naval warfare. Instead of hiding ships, he decided to paint them in bright geometric patterns that looked like Cubist paintings. Dazzle camouflage, as this system was called, wasn't intended to conceal a ship but to confuse the submarine commander as to its course, speed, and type. Over 4,000 ships were painted this way. Picasso claimed that the Cubists invented this camouflage. A Glasgow zoologist believed the idea was stolen from nature. And what did the German submariners themselves think?
