Quick Tip: H&K MP5 vs MP5K - What's the Difference?
Today, Brownells Gun Tech™ and all-round firearm answer man Keith Ford explains the difference between the H&K MP5 and MP5K submachine guns. Development of the MP5 began in 1964, and it went into service in 1966. Coming along in 1976, the MP5K is a shortened version of the MP5 - "K" standing for "kurz," the German word for "short." Keith's sample guns are ATF registered SBRs and are actually clones of the Heckler & Koch originals: a Dakota Tactical D54-N for the MP5, and a Zenith Z-5P for the MP5K. For the sake of simplicity, Keith refers to them by the original H&K names. After a proper "pinky check" of the chambers to make sure both are unloaded, he gives us an overview of the major components of each gun. MP5 and MP5K stocks are not interchangeable. (The rear of the MP5K receiver is configured differently, requiring a different stock attachment.) Neither are the bolt carriers or handguards. The triggers are the same, but the trigger packs they're housed in are NOT. Of the two, Keith's favorite is the K. What's yours? Let us know in the comments below.
