Heckler & Koch: The Engineers Who Built Guns From the Rubble of a Bombed Mauser Factory
In April 1945, French occupation forces walked into Oberndorf am Neckar and systematically dismantled the most important arms factory in German history. The Mauser works had been building weapons since 1811. The French demolished 60% of the buildings, shipped the machinery to France as war reparations, and burned every factory record. Oberndorf's identity was erased. Three former Mauser engineers — Edmund Heckler, Theodor Koch, and Alex Seidel — salvaged what the French left behind and started making bicycle parts and sewing machine components inside the gutted factory. They were prohibited from manufacturing weapons. So they waited. For six years, they machined precision parts and waited for the world to change. In 1959, their rifle became the standard-issue weapon of the West German Army. In 1977, their submachine gun was used to storm a hijacked Lufthansa aircraft in Mogadishu. In 2011, their carbine was carried into the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed. This is the story of how three engineers turned a bombed-out factory into one of the most important firearms manufacturers on Earth. —— Sources and further reading: Heckler & Koch official company history — heckler-koch.com Mauser factory history — Oberndorf Waffenmuseum archives "The H&K G3: The World's Most Successful Battle Rifle" — Gun Digest MP5 operational history — Mogadishu 1977 (Operation Feuerzauber), Iranian Embassy Siege 1980 (Operation Nimrod) HK416 development and adoption — U.S. Marine Corps M27 IAR program documentation G36 accuracy controversy — Bundeswehr Technical Center reports, 2012–2015 Wikipedia entries for Heckler & Koch, Heckler & Koch G3, Heckler & Koch MP5, Heckler & Koch HK416, Heckler & Koch G36, Mauser This channel does not accept sponsorships or brand deals.
