🟢 IGLESIA DEL CORPUS CHRISTI | 400 AÑOS DE HISTORIA DENTRO DEL GRAN CONVENTO DE LAS CARBONERAS 🟢

#madrid #madridcentro #turismomadrid Walking through the center of Madrid can bring pleasant surprises, as is the case with this small church. And it is that nothing suggests that behind the small access door you can see a temple so simple but so beautiful at the same time. It is part of a closed convent, which provides a very interesting service to whoever wants to use it. And it is that the nuns who live there are famous for selling sweets that they make themselves. It is another incentive for those who want to make this visit. The Corpus Christi church is a small temple located in the Centro district of Madrid. It hardly attracts attention since it does not have towers or bell towers, but the visit is not interesting. It belongs to the convent of Las Carboneras del Corpus Christi, also known as “Convento de las Carboneras”. It was founded in 1607 by order of Beatriz Ramírez de Mendoza, Countess of Castellar and Lady of Rivas, lady of Queen Ana of Austria. Its current appearance is the same as it was 400 years ago, something almost unique in Madrid. From the outside, the baroque doorway stands out, which has a relief on the lintel. Saint Jerome and Saint Paula are represented adoring the Blessed Sacrament. It is topped by a cross, the work of the Leoni school. The rest of the façade is sober, a brick wall with four rectangular windows. The temple is accessed from the Epistle side, the only possible access. The interior of the church has a single nave with a three-section half-barrel vault, with lunettes and fluted pillars without capital. The master builder Miguel de Soria was in charge of designing and building the complex in the first quarter of the 17th century, considered one of the representatives of the first Madrid Baroque. The main chapel is elevated above the general level, the only example of this type preserved in Madrid. In it is the main altarpiece, which is a jewel of Madrid's heritage, since very few of the 17th century remain in the capital. Its authorship is attributed to Antón de Morales, while the central canvas of the last supper and the small paintings are the work of Vicente Carducho. The lower part of the altarpiece is made of gilt and polychrome wood. The paintings represent Saint Augustine, Saint Joaquón with the Virgin Child, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Christopher. In the center stands out the tabernacle with goldsmith custody from the 17th century. Happy Monday!
