#madrid #madridcentro #turismomadrid The Iglesia Catedral de las Fuerzas Armadas de Madrid, also known as Iglesia del Sacramento, is one of the best examples of Madrid Baroque in the capital. It is located in the Centro district of Madrid. The building was designed by the architect Juan Gómez de Mora in 1615. However, its construction did not begin until 1671 and it was not completed until 1744. During these years several architects were involved: Francisco Bautista, Manuel del Olmo, and Bartolomé Hurtado García, who directed the work mainly. The granite and Herreriano veneer façade, a sample of elegance and sobriety, is the work of Pedro de Ribera and was built in 1744. It has three entrance arches, two semicircular and the lower central one, and a bas-relief above the access main one that represents San Benito and San Bernardo adoring the Blessed Sacrament. As an interesting detail, the church does not have a bell tower, but it does have a bell on the façade, right at the top, in a small window. Said bell is dated 1756, a date that is written on the object itself, and it was made in bronze. There is a small courtyard that leads directly to the atrium that gives access to the temple. In this room, an 18th century painting by the González Velázquez brothers stands out. It is a trompe l'oeil that represents an open sky with little angels and inscriptions that allude to the Eucharist. After passing the wooden doors, we enter the church, with a Latin cross plan and great light. It mixes a counter-reformation classicism with touches of baroque, rococo, which melt together to form the Madrid baroque. The nave is half-barreled with lunettes, supported by attached pilasters and topped by composite capitals. Happy Saturday!
