Kornati West Marina (Biograd na Moru) is a great place to show how to "read" the port and plan a maneuver before you even put the gear in. In this episode, I first go over the specifics of the marina itself (layout, approaches, maneuvering space), and then – using a dry-erase board – I break down the basics of planning entry and exit in strong northeasterly winds (Bora/NE). Kornati West is the western part of the Kornati Marina complex in Biograd, divided into several interconnected zones (including the main and western sections). This means that in practice, you may experience different conditions depending on which "sector" you moor in – and this significantly influences your chosen strategy: approach angle, minimum steering speed, spring operation, fender positioning, and crew priorities. In the video, I show my process: analysis of the wind and site constraints (where the wind is most bearable and where you have the least margin), variants of the maneuver (plan A/B) and the moment of decision to leave, and "dry" planning – that is, a drawing that helps eliminate chaos before pressure sets in in the port. At just 20 years old, I was already a sea helmsman, a sailing instructor, and soon the youngest Vice-President for Training at the District Sailing Association in Kielce and the youngest instructor of that rank in the country. I organized and participated in numerous cruises and training camps, from Trzebież to the Sailing Education Center at the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association Headquarters in Gdynia and Sztynort in Masuria. However, I am most proud of the training I conducted, perhaps as one of the first and few in Poland, for disabled children from a school in Busko-Zdrój. I taught them sailing at the best center in Europe at the time, the iconic Trzebież. I sailed on many Polish vessels, both small and large. I was aboard my beloved Pogoria right after its construction, teaching, commanding, and gathering invaluable memories and experiences. There were also: Iskra, Dar Młodzieży, Zawisza Czarny, and Generał Zaruski.
