The strong northwesterly Mistral in the Port of Biograd is a great training ground for practicing port maneuvers. In this video, I analyze yachts' port entries and approaches to the quay: what works, what doesn't, and the most common mistakes. In the video, I discuss, among other things: how to plan a port entry in strong winds and confined spaces, the most common mistakes: poor speed, late decisions, lack of a plan B, poor wind attitude, correct maneuver patterns (propulsion, rudder, engine operation, bow/stern position), when to abort an approach and execute a safe "go-around," how to prepare the crew and mooring lines to ensure a repeatable and smooth maneuver. At the end, I add a step-by-step, clear and easy-to-follow discussion on a magnetic board with model yachts. At just 20 years old, I was already a sea helmsman, a sailing instructor, and soon the youngest Vice-President for Training at the District Sailing Association in Kielce and the youngest instructor of that rank in the country. I organized and participated in numerous cruises and training camps, from Trzebież to the Sailing Education Center at the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association Headquarters in Gdynia and Sztynort in Masuria. However, I am most proud of the training I conducted, perhaps as one of the first and few in Poland, for disabled children from a school in Busko-Zdrój. I taught them sailing at the best center in Europe at the time, the iconic Trzebież. I sailed on many Polish vessels, both small and large. I was aboard my beloved Pogoria right after its construction, teaching, commanding, and gathering invaluable memories and experiences. There were also: Iskra, Dar Młodzieży, Zawisza Czarny, and Generał Zaruski. Since 1998, he has specialized in sailing training, charters, and organizing cruises in the warm southern seas among the Croatian and Greek islands. Capt. Jacek Szczepaniak
