How to approach a long-side berth on a sailing yacht in very strong, pushing winds? In this video, I demonstrate a safe and smooth stern approach to the berth in winds over 30 knots. I discuss passing both stern lines, turning the yacht on the berth, operating the rudder and engine, and the differences between a yacht with one and two rudders. For a yacht with two rudders, I also demonstrate why, after approaching the berth stern, you should begin working on a line passed from the bow and pull the yacht in with a winch and the crew's strength. At just 20 years old, I was already a sea helmsman, a sailing instructor, and soon the youngest Vice President for Training at the District Sailing Association in Kielce and the youngest instructor of this rank in the country. I organized and participated in many cruises and training camps, from Trzebież to the Sailing Education Center at the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (ZHP) Headquarters in Gdynia and Sztynort in Masuria. However, I am most proud of the training I conducted, perhaps as one of the first and few in Poland, for children with disabilities from a school in Busko-Zdrój. I taught them sailing at what was then the best center in Europe, the iconic Trzebież. I sailed on many Polish vessels, both small and large. I was aboard my beloved Pogoria right after its construction, teaching, commanding, and gathering invaluable memories and experiences. There were also Iskra, Dar Młodzieży, Zawisza Czarny, and Generał Zaruski. Since 1998, I have specialized in sailing training, charters, and organizing cruises in the warm southern seas among the Croatian and Greek islands. Capt. Jacek Szczepaniak
