STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary, anatomically-based approach to the original exercise method pioneered by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It was developed in the late 1980s by former dancer Moira Stott (later Merrithew) and her husband, Lindsay G. Merrithew, in Toronto, Canada. Following a career-ending injury, Moira Stott trained in classical Pilates under Romana Kryzanowska in New York. While appreciating the method, she aimed to modernize it by incorporating modern biomechanics and spinal rehabilitation principles. Working with a team of physical therapists and sports medicine professionals, the Merrithews revised the classical repertoire to place a stronger focus on neutral spine alignment, stabilization, and safe muscle engagement. The main differences between STOTT Pilates and Joseph Pilates classical Pilates (originally known as Contrology) is that rather than focusing on the classical "flat back" approach, Stott Pilates emphasizes restoring the natural curves of the spine and utilizes a more progressive approach to exercises (essential, intermediate, advanced). STOTT Pilates is renowned for its focus on rehabilitation and scientific alignment. Subscribe for new Pilates workouts for mat and reformer regularly (and new equipment coming soon).
