He first brought the song to the band on January 27th, one of the final days of the Get Back sessions. They ran through it a few times before shelving it after the rooftop concert. On February 25th, George recorded a strong demo of the track, showcasing ideas for both bass and guitar parts, entirely by himself: • Old Brown Shoe (Demo) . The band returned to the song on April 16th, with all four members present for an evening session at Abbey Road. Many sources claim Ringo was absent due to filming The Magic Christian, but his shooting schedule mostly consisted of morning sessions. One of the most debated aspects of the recording is which Beatle played which part—a topic that has fueled discussion among authors and fans for decades. Take two ( • Old Brown Shoe (Take 2) ) is made up of four tracks: Track 1: Drums Track 2: Vocals Track 3: Guitar Track 4: Piano The Get Back rehearsals feature Ringo on drums playing parts that match exactly, and some fills (notably at 6:37) are classic Ringo and extremely difficult to execute. While Paul could certainly impress on drums, the fill at 6:37 is challenging even for professional drummers and requires great technique—making Ringo the most likely player. George on piano also makes sense, as his February demo and January run-throughs match the final track’s piano part. At the end of take two, you can even hear George stopping the take while noodling on piano. Paul on guitar is the prevailing view, though there’s a slim chance it might be John. However, given that John rarely contributed much to songs that weren’t his during this period, Paul remains the more plausible choice. Take four was selected as the best take, and George overdubbed his Bass VI part onto track six. The bass tone alone points strongly to the Bass VI, further supported by a 1987 interview in which George said: "That was me going nuts... doing exactly what I do on guitar." Ringo also added light stick-tapping on the same track, and Paul overdubbed guitar licks. George later added a new vocal to track two, with Paul and John contributing backing vocals on track five. John’s voice is most audible during the solo section and outro. All vocals were distorted in the final mix by engineer Jeff Jarratt. Two days later, George completed work on Old Brown Shoe, adding an organ part on track seven, his guitar solo on track eight, and another unknown track. The solo was played on his Rosewood Telecaster through a Leslie speaker. Final track order: Track 1: Drums (Ringo) Track 2: Vocals (George lead, Paul and John backing) Track 3: Rhythm guitar (Paul) Track 4: Piano (George) Track 5: Vocal overdub (George, Paul, John), possible guitar solo overdub (April 18th / George) Track 6: Bass (George), guitar overdub (Paul), stick-tapping (Ringo) Track 7: Organ (April 18th / George) Track 8: Guitar solo (April 18th / George) I highly recommend watching the following videos—mentioned in my intro—by @isolatedstems and @GearThereEverywhere for further evidence: • Deconstructing Old Brown Shoe - The Beatle... • Who Played Bass And Drums On "Old Brown Sh...
