Written by Paul McCartney, the song reflects the band's growing business frustrations, particularly their dealings with Allen Klein and the financial turmoil surrounding Apple. The song is divided into three distinct sections, which Paul identified by their opening lyrics: "You Never Give Me Your Money," "Out of College," and "One Sweet Dream." The first addresses the band's business disputes, the second nostalgically recalls the Beatles' early days, and the third shifts to a more optimistic outlook inspired by Paul's relationship with Linda. The idea for the medley began to take shape in April 1969, while Get Back was still the band's primary focus. In interviews, John even suggested that the long-form medley was originally intended to be part of the Get Back project. By then, he had already written "Polythene Pam" and "Mean Mr. Mustard," while Paul had developed the three sections of "You Never Give Me Your Money." Although recording on these songs began during this period, most of the medley had yet to be written or recorded, as the band was still working toward the proposed June deadline for Get Back. Recording of You Never Give Me Your Money began on May 6th, 1969, with Paul on piano and lead vocal, Ringo on drums, John on rhythm guitar, and George on lead guitar. After 36 takes, take 30 was selected as the foundation for the finished recording. During this session, Paul's piano was routed through a Leslie speaker, though this effect was ultimately omitted from the final mix. Throughout several sessions in July, the band gradually built up the arrangement. John and George double-tracked their guitar parts, Paul overdubbed a new bass line and re-recorded his lead vocal, Ringo added tambourine while the other three recorded the song's rich backing vocals, and Paul completed the second section with tubular bells. The song's ending, however, remained relatively undeveloped, concluding as a loose 12-bar blues jam. An early idea for the transition into Sun King involved holding an organ chord to bridge the two songs, but this was abandoned. Instead, on August 5th, Paul assembled a collage of tape loops, consisting primarily of birdsong, insects, and other nature sounds accompanied by wind chimes, creating the seamless transition heard on the finished album.
