Something is often regarded as George Harrison's finest track, and rightfully so. His first (and only) A-side for the band, the track has been highlighted as one of the band's best not only by critics, fans, but also John, Paul and Ringo themselves. George wrote the track in 1968 during the White Album sessions, but didn't bring it to the band until the end of the Get Back sessions. By then, the song was still unfinished, with George struggling to find good rhymes - cauliflower or pomegranate were used as place-holders, but George eventually finished the lyrics. Harrison recorded a guitar demo in February, overdubbing a simple piano part too : • The Beatles - Something (Studio Demo / Audio) . The band later rehearsed a full arrangement in April, during the Old Brown Shoe sessions. Unfortunately, only chatter from this day has appeared on bootlegs : • Video . Work on the final studio version began on May 2nd with Ringo on drums, Paul on bass, George on guitar and John on piano. Take 36 of the song was chosen for future overdubs. John's piano part was eventually mostly cut from the final mix apart from the bridge section, but in this video I've isolated it from take 37, take 36's reduction mix. Take 36/37 lasted almost 8 minutes, with the band jamming on a rough idea of Lennon's future solo track Remember after the take. A few days later, George recorded his lead guitar parts and Ringo + Paul added cymbal rolls and percussion in the bridge. At some point during the overdub stages of the track, Paul recorded a bass overdub that is much simpler, heard at 3:10 - this overdub appears in the 2009 remaster but is extremely buried. Giles' 2019 mix removed the bass overdub from the mix I believe. Later in July, George and Paul recorded their vocals and Billy Preston was brought in to add an organ part. The final touches on Something were made in August 1969 when George Martin's sublime string arrangement was recorded. The band's Remember jam was finally cut from the mix in August too.
