Demolishing the Addition (ep. 10)
What started as a simple renovation quickly turned into a full demolition and remodel of our abandoned mobile home's addition. Welcome back to Those Flip'n McIntyres! In this episode, we make one of the biggest decisions of the project so far: the addition has to go. After uncovering extensive deterioration throughout and improper construction practices, we determine that most of the addition is beyond saving. The only component worth keeping is some of the floor structure. Everything else—the roof, walls, insulation, vapour barrier — has to be removed. Before diving into demolition, we catch everyone up on the progress we've made around the property. We relevel the backyard using an excavator, framed in the new living room windows and future sliding glass door, and run a new water line from the south end of the mobile home to the north side of the property to supply water to our RVs. Then the real work begins. As we start tearing apart the addition, we encounter more surprises hidden inside the structure, including spider nests, wasp nests, and years of neglected building materials. One of the most dramatic moments of the episode occurs when an entire wall suddenly collapses while we're removing it, knocking Gordon to the ground. Thankfully, he wasn't hurt, but it was a reminder of just how unstable this addition had become. By the end of the episode, the addition has been stripped down to its remaining floor structure, giving us a clean slate and the opportunity to build something much better in its place. In This Episode: 🔨 Releveling the backyard with an excavator 🏠 Framing in new living room windows 🚪 Framing a future sliding glass door and deck access 💧 Installing a new water line for the RVs 🕷️ Discovering spider nests and wasp nests ⚠️ Demolishing the deteriorated addition 😲 A collapsing wall knocks Gordon over 🛠️ Creating a blank slate for a brand-new addition This abandoned 1970s mobile home renovation continues to challenge us every step of the way, but every setback brings us closer to the vision we have for this property. Follow along as we transform a neglected mobile home into something we're proud of—one project, one lesson, and one demolition at a time.
