TÁTICAS BÁSICAS DO TÊNIS: COMO SACAR COM DIREÇÃO? | SUZANA SILVA TÊNIS
SERVING WITH DIRECTION: How to start the point serving with a tactical advantage in singles games We have 5 main tactical situations in tennis: SERVING, RETURNING THE SERVE, EXCHANGING BALLS OR BUILDING THE POINT, GOING TO THE NET and PASSING THE NET PLAYER. In this second program of the Basic Tactics series, we will talk again about serving, which is how we put the ball into play. The second most important tactical intention after consistency is direction: we want to serve in a direction that puts our opponent in an unfavorable situation, and we have 3 main ways to do this: 1. Serving "wide": by directing the serve close to the singles sidelines, we take our opponent to one of the corners of the court. We can then direct the next ball to the corner that was left "empty", and, making the opponent run, aiming for him to hit off balance and shorten the next ball. Many points begin with an attack with a serve from one side + the first ball from the other! 2. Serving "closed": by directing the serve close to the center line, we aim for the opponent's backhand or to surprise them with their forehand. Tennis players are getting better and better with their backhand, but it's from the forehand side that serve returns tend to be more offensive. But... we preferably need to know our opponents to understand which side they return worse from, or which side the return is more favorable for us to hit with confidence. And, to avoid always serving from the same side, it's important to vary to surprise the opponent. 3. Serving to the body: many tennis players have difficulty getting their body away from the ball! In addition, serving to the body reduces the chance of the opponent angling the return of serve and is also a safer serve! That's why it's so widely used as a tactic on the second serve, both in singles and doubles. If you followed our Basic Techniques series and put it into practice, you are serving with the continental grip. To direct the balls where you want, it's like throwing a ball with your hand: you need to rotate your arm inward and use forearm pronation outward! See in the video how easy it is! We recorded an exercise we like to do to start practicing direction on the serve with a drone by @gabriel.imagens, so you can see how simple it is to stimulate pronation control. After practicing throwing the ball with your hand at the targets, we put on the racket, starting the training from the back row to the back of the court in 4 progressive distances. Marking points using lines, hoops and cones makes the training even more fun! And you'll be surprised, after practice, how much your direction control increases during matches! The professional tennis player already chooses where he will serve the next ball before entering the point. During the ritual of hitting the ball on the ground, he visualizes the ball, like a yellow beam of light, leaving his racket and falling in the desired area. Try it! Ah, but I'm not using the continental grip yet! No problem: make this change gradually, and practice pronation with your throws and with the racket: your control will gradually improve. Apply these tips and tell us if your serve became more directional!
