Woman escapes through window after ex-husband allegedly tries to burn and hack her during attack

A couva woman narrowly escaped with her life after her ex-husband allegedly doused her with a flammable liquid, threatened to set her on fire, and launched a brutal attack using a knife and a piece of corrugated steel. The victim is Alana Joseph, 41, of Carli Bay Road, Couva. According to reports, Joseph was at her residence around 8:15 p.m. on Monday June 22nd, when an argument erupted between her and her ex-husband, Robin Basdeo, 55. During the confrontation, Basdeo allegedly threw what appeared to be a highly flammable liquid on the woman and threatened to burn her alive. Investigators said the situation quickly escalated when the suspect armed himself with a knife and a piece of corrugated steel. He allegedly attacked Joseph, repeatedly striking her about the body with the metal sheet and slashing her with the knife. As the assault intensified, relatives reportedly rushed to intervene in an effort to protect the woman from further harm. Fearing for her life, Joseph managed to escape the house through an open window before running to a nearby neighbour's home, where she sought refuge. She was later transported to the Couva District Health Facility by relatives and subsequently transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital for further treatment. Following the incident, police launched a search for the suspect.
