RE-BROADCAST- TUESDAY 23RD JUNE 2026 -CRIME WATCH LIVE Highlights: Woman escapes through window after ex-husband allegedly tries to burn and hack her during violent attack • A Couva woman narrowly escaped with her life after her ex-husband allegedly doused her with a flammable liquid, threatened to set her on fire, and launched a brutal attack using a knife and a piece of corrugated steel. • The victim, Alana Joseph, 41, of Carli Bay Road, Couva, remains under medical care following the terrifying ordeal, which unfolded at her home on Monday night. • According to reports, Joseph was at her residence around 8:15 p.m. on Monday June 22nd, when an argument erupted between her and her ex-husband, Robin Basdeo, 55. • During the confrontation, Basdeo allegedly threw what appeared to be a highly flammable liquid on the woman and threatened to burn her alive. • Investigators said the situation quickly escalated when the suspect armed himself with a knife and a piece of corrugated steel. He allegedly attacked Joseph, repeatedly striking her about the body with the metal sheet and slashing her with the knife. • As the assault intensified, relatives reportedly rushed to intervene in an effort to protect the woman from further harm. • Fearing for her life, Joseph managed to escape the house through an open window before running to a nearby neighbour's home, where she sought refuge. • She was later transported to the Couva District Health Facility by relatives and subsequently transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital for further treatment. • Following the incident, police launched a search for the suspect. • Basdeo was later located on a nearby street, arrested by officers and taken to the Couva Police Station, where he remains in custody pending further investigations. Radio comment lands grieving father in police custody under State of Emergency Regulations • A father whose son was killed in a police shooting earlier this year has been detained under the State of Emergency Regulations after allegedly making a statement on live radio that investigators say was prejudicial to public safety. • Christopher Samaroo, 63, of River Range Road, La Seiva, Maraval, became the subject of a police investigation after comments he made during a Father's Day programme on i95.5FM on Sunday, June 21, 2026. • According to police, Samaroo was detained under Regulation 11 of the Emergency Powers Regulations, 2026, which deals with statements deemed likely to be prejudicial to public safety. Investigators allege that during the live broadcast he stated: "Left it up to me I will just get a gun and every policeman I see I will kill them." • Earlier on Monday June 22nd, Samaroo and his attorney, Aaron Steven Lewis, visited the Central Police Station in Port of Spain in an apparent effort to address the controversy. • Speaking with CNC3, Samaroo maintained that his comments had been taken out of context. Missing business owner's vehicle found abandoned as search for him intensifies • The search for missing businessman Kelvin Samaroo has taken a troubling turn after his vehicle was discovered abandoned in Barrackpore days after he was last seen. • Police and concerned relatives are continuing efforts to locate Samaroo, who has not been seen since the night of Friday, June 19. • According to reports, Samaroo was last observed around 9 p.m. while driving behind a relative along Esmeralda Main Road. Both vehicles later travelled along Union Road, Marabella, where the relative turned onto Battoo Avenue. Samaroo continued west along Union Road and has not been seen since.
