Beauty Under Pressure | China’s “Colorado” Grand Canyon | Enshi 4K Scenic Drive
This drive explores a lesser-seen side of Enshi Grand Canyon—not from the main hiking trails, but from the roads that connect Mufu Ancient Town, mountain farmland, rural communities and the enormous karst walls surrounding the canyon. The journey begins at Enshi Grand Canyon Parking Lot No. 2 and follows National Highway G242 through Mufu Ancient Town. After leaving the town, the route turns onto Yunfengjing Road and continues along quiet rural canyon roads before ending at Yunlong Hydropower Station. Although the drive covers only 10.6 kilometers, the landscape changes constantly. Old-town streets give way to cultivated slopes, scattered homes, forested peaks and towering limestone walls that seem to close in around the road. This combination of beauty and overwhelming scale is why Enshi is often compared with Colorado’s great canyon country. Historically known as Mufu Grand Canyon, Enshi Grand Canyon lies in the Qingjiang River basin of southwestern Hubei, within the greater Wuling Mountain region. Its landscape was shaped by the interaction of soluble carbonate rock, underground rivers, tectonic uplift and prolonged river erosion. The result is a three-dimensional karst world of cliffs, isolated pillars, peak clusters, caves, sinkholes, natural bridges, underground channels and deeply cut gorges. The Enshi Grand Canyon–Tenglongdong Cave area became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2024. Its exposed rocks preserve a geological record extending from the Cambrian to the Cretaceous periods, while Permian and Triassic carbonate formations are especially widespread. Over immense spans of time, water entered fractures in these rocks, enlarged underground passages and helped create the vertical terrain visible today. Mufu is more than an access point for the famous scenic area. It is also a living mountain settlement shaped by Tujia culture, agriculture, tourism and the practical realities of transportation in steep terrain. Beyond the visitor facilities, this route reveals everyday homes, fields, village roads and local infrastructure beneath some of the most dramatic cliffs in central China. The journey ends near the Yunlong River hydropower system. The Yunlong River is connected to a complex karst network of underground streams and the famous Yunlong Ground Fissure farther downstream. Hydropower development in this mountainous landscape demonstrates how local communities have adapted roads, settlements and energy infrastructure to steep elevation changes and powerful river systems. There is no narration and no background music—only the authentic sound of the road and the surrounding environment. Enjoy an immersive 4K scenic drive through the hidden rural world beneath the giant walls of Enshi Grand Canyon.
