Would You Drive This Cliff Road in the Rain? | Hidden Chongqing, China 4K

This was one of the very few mountain roads that made me feel genuinely afraid behind the wheel. I knew the road would be narrow, exposed and wet, but the reality deep inside Wulipo, Wushan County, was far more intimidating than expected. The rain-darkened surface, blind bends, steep mountainsides and uncertain road edges created a constant sense of pressure. When I finally reached the end, one thought was unmistakably clear: I did not want to drive this road again. The journey begins near Wulipo Boundary Marker No. 002 in Xuema Village, Guanyang Town. It continues through the remote mountain area around Laoying Village before reaching the Yangjiacao settlement. The drive covers only 9.8 kilometres, yet it takes approximately 24 minutes. Although the recorded elevation changes only from 1,576 to 1,623 metres, the road repeatedly cuts across steep slopes, where rain and low clouds make bends, edges and passing spaces much harder to judge. This road lies within Chongqing Wulipo National Nature Reserve in northeastern Wushan, close to the border between Chongqing and Hubei. The reserve contains primeval forest, subalpine meadows, mountain water sources and exceptionally rich biodiversity. Its wider landscape rises from around 175 to 2,680 metres, and part of Wulipo was incorporated into the Hubei Shennongjia World Natural Heritage property in 2021. This is not a polished tourist highway. It is a working village road running through a protected mountain landscape and communities that were once heavily isolated by the terrain. Laoying Village lived for years behind the barrier of the mountains. With steep slopes, difficult geology and limited access for heavy machinery, local residents and village officials once helped open roads using hammers and steel chisels. The 18.8-kilometre connection between Laoying Village and Guanyang Town was fully opened in 2018. Improved access later supported new residential settlements such as Yangjiacao, as well as the transport of medicinal plants, rural guesthouses and everyday village life. For visitors, this may look like a wild and frightening cliff road. For the people who live here, it is also a vital link between their homes and the outside world.
