Apparently, no one wants to pick up the large, 67 kg travel basket, which arrived in Stettin on the evening train from Berlin on March 16, 1916. The basket has now been sitting here in the luggage room for three weeks, and still no one has come forward to claim the monstrosity. According to regulations, the baggage is now opened. And so it happens on April 5, 1916. In the presence of several witnesses, the basket is opened, and what is revealed to those present makes their blood run cold. Beneath blood-soaked blankets and sheets lies the body of a woman. The body is that of a certain Martha Franzke, as it soon turns out. In Berlin, where the travel basket had been dropped off at the Stettin train station, Detective Inspector Ernst Gennat is assigned to the case. His investigation leads to the Woitas barber shop on Elsasser Straße. The statements made by the owner, Ms. Elsner, are full of contradictions and inconsistencies. Nevertheless, the murderer seems to have been found quickly: a woman named Helene Bahl had a relationship with the victim that was anything but harmonious. Suspiciously, this woman Bahl hasn't been seen since Martha Franzke's disappearance. The case seems pretty clear when Helene Bahl is finally found and arrested.
