August Sternickel - das Mord-Phantom im Kaiserreich

At the beginning of the 20th century, August Sternickel, a trained miller, traveled through the German Empire as a migrant worker. Under various false identities, he offered his services as a farmhand and assistant, but anyone who hired him had to fear for their life. Sternickel scouted his employers for their valuables, then sought out a few willing assistants in a dive bar, and together with them robbed their respective employers, for which many a landowner paid with his life, whose house was often subsequently burned down by Sternickel. Sternickel also worked as a marriage swindler, thief, and burglar. On his journey across the German Empire, he left behind numerous victims, the exact number of whom could ultimately no longer be determined. On January 7, 1913, Sternickel and three accomplices robbed the landowner Kallies in the small community of Ortwig in Brandenburg. An act with serious consequences for everyone involved. In this article, we shed light on the life of August Sternickel, the almost forgotten serial killer from the imperial era, and remember his victims.
