The Final Ride on BART's Legacy Fleet - A Ride into History
In September 11, 1972, BART officially opened their system to the public. The first fleet, known as the Legacy Cars, took the very first passengers between MacArthur and Fremont stations, as this section of the mainline opened first. On September 27, 1972 , former president Richard Nixon visited the Bay Area to take his first ride on the BART system while he coined this system as a solution for transit problems in America. He allocated grants to help BART extend their system farther and into the Peninsula. In 1974, the rest of the system opened as Transbay Tube operations has begun. Ever since, the BART system has been serving as a major lifeline between San Francisco and the East Bay, carrying commuters to work, Warriors fans to the former Oracle Arena, A's fans also to the former Oracle Arena, and so on. While these trains have been through many highs and lows, the Legacy Fleet has successfully traveled many miles while carrying many passengers shaping what BART is like in the present. I have been riding the Legacy Fleet ever since I was born. I remember riding these with my grandparents to Oakland to get some lunch. I also remember when I rode these to the Coliseum to go see the A's for my 5th grade field trip. Ever since my first rides on these trains, became amused by the great views from the windows and the nostalgic sound of the AC traction motors. The most memorable part of these trains for me was where the seats made of cloth, the floor was made of carpet, and the smell that came with the BART cars. Over the years, these BART cars have taken me everywhere, from Bay Fair to Oakland, San Francisco, Fremont, etc. I never realized how much sentimental value these cars actually meant to me when they were starting to get retired. These trains will truly be a big piece of my childhood and BART will just never feel the same without these. I am having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the Fleet of the Future, now known as the Gen2 BART cars, since they still feel a little new to me. Anyways, so long to the Legacy Fleet, and thank you for serving BART for over 50 years back to when the system first opened. I am pretty sad that a big piece of childhood is gone, but all good things must come to end. In this video, I go the ceremony that was hosted at MacArthur station and ride the the Legacy for one last time to Fremont station replicating the first service completed when the system first opened to passengers and witness the trains pulling out of Fremont station for the very last time. The very last Legacy train I rode was headed by A Car 1269 and contained B Car 1834, which will be preserved at the Western Railway Museum.
