The Boshin War was fought between the forces of the former Shogunate and the new government. The former Shogunate forces became enemies of the Imperial Court with the advent of the "Kinshi no Gobanta." Tokugawa Yoshinobu fled to Edo Castle to avoid the Tokugawa dynasty's downfall. To prevent the city of Edo from being engulfed in flames, Katsu Kaishu and Saigo Takamori negotiated a bloodless surrender of Edo Castle, sparing Yoshinobu the hasty suicide. However, Matsudaira Katamori of the Aizu clan chose to fight the new government forces, leading to a tragic outcome. The Aizu War 1868 (Keio 4/Meiji 1) was one of the stages of the Boshin War. It was fought over the fate of the Aizu clan, between the Meiji government forces, led by the Satsuma and Tosa clans, and the former Shogunate forces, including the Aizu clan and its supporting alliance, the Oshu-Uetsu Alliance. The main battlefield was the Aizu region of present-day Fukushima Prefecture. Boshin War The Boshin War (1868-1869) was Japan's largest civil war, fought between the new government forces, centered around the Satsuma, Choshu, and Tosa clans established after the restoration of imperial rule, and the former Shogunate forces, the Oshu-Uetsu Alliance, and the Ezo Republic (Shogunate Army and Navy). The name comes from the fact that the zodiac sign for the year 1868/1869 was Boshin. The Meiji government's victory in the war, and the disappearance of other warring parties within the country, led to the end of the treaty-enforced neutrality of the great powers in the civil war. From then on, the Boshin government was internationally recognized as the legitimate government governing Japan.
