The Summer Siege of Osaka marked the downfall of the Toyotomi clan and the final battle of the Sengoku period. Toyotomi Hideyori and his forces made peace with Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Winter Siege, but were subsequently overwhelmed by the all-out resistance of the ronin allying with Toyotomi, escalating into the Summer Siege. Sanada Nobushige, who had no desire to fight the Tokugawa, risked his life in a battle. Osaka Castle's moat was filled in, forcing a field battle rather than a siege, but it was no mere field battle. The Toyotomi forces, at a great disadvantage, devised a cunning strategy, led by Sanada Nobushige, to inflict hardship on the Tokugawa forces, and challenged them to the final battle of the Sengoku period.
