History of the Sengoku period. The Honnoji Incident saw Oda Nobunaga killed by Akechi Mitsuhide. It is commonly believed that Ieyasu crossed the Iga Pass to quickly return to his territory in Mikawa Province (Okazaki), thus escaping the crisis without losing his life. So, what about Ieyasu's mysterious behavior? Ieyasu had been staying near Honnoji Temple in Kyoto until two days before the incident. However, he departed for Sakai in Osaka just before Nobunaga arrived at Honnoji Temple. This article will thoroughly explain Ieyasu's mysterious behavior before and after the Honnoji Incident, drawing on various historical sources. Ieyasu's Crossing of Iga The Honnoji Incident occurred on June 2, 1582 (June 21, 1582). Tokugawa Ieyasu was distraught upon hearing the news of the Honnoji Incident, and initially proposed going to Kyoto, under the control of Akechi Mitsuhide, and taking his own life at Chion-in Temple (the head temple of the Jodo sect's Chinzei school), which had ties to the Matsudaira clan. However, persuaded by his retainers, including Honda Tadakatsu, he decided to return home, returning to Mikawa Province via Iga Province. The Honnoji Incident occurred in the early morning of June 2, 1582 (June 21, 1582), when his retainer, Akechi Mitsuhide, plotted a rebellion and attacked Oda Nobunaga while he was staying at Honnoji Temple in Kyoto. Nobunaga was attacked in his sleep, and upon realizing he was surrounded, he set fire to the temple and committed suicide. Nobunaga's eldest son, Nobutada, the head of the Oda clan, moved from Myokakuji Temple, where he was staying, to Nijo Onshinzo, where he fought back, but soon set the temple on fire and committed suicide. This loss of a key figure in the Oda government led to the establishment of the Toyotomi government by Hashiba Hideyoshi, who defeated Mitsuhide at the Battle of Yamazaki on June 13.
