Who Shot Rochester Radio Host Roger McCall?
On the evening of December 12, 2003, beloved Rochester radio personality Roger McCall, known to listeners as “Unkle Rog,” was shot in the driveway of his son’s home on Madison Street in Rochester, New York. He was 52 years old. Roger had survived a terminal cancer diagnosis years earlier and built a loyal following during nearly three decades at WCMF-FM, where his late-night rock show spotlighted local musicians and underground artists across upstate New York. When first responders arrived, Roger was still conscious. He told police he believed he had been robbed. He could not identify the shooter. But investigators quickly noticed something strange: Roger’s wallet was still on him. His personal firearm was found nearby, unfired. A sudden burst of lake-effect snow covered potential footprints within minutes, and years later, a witness would claim the shooting may not have been random at all. Early theories centered on robbery, as Roger was known to collect rent from tenants at properties he once co-owned. But new information suggests the possibility of a more personal motive, potentially involving someone who knew Roger’s routine. A witness who came forward years later described seeing a neighbor allegedly waiting for Roger that night. The account aligned with physical evidence at the scene. Yet without corroboration, the case stalled. More than 20 years later, no one has been charged in Roger McCall’s murder. In this episode of The Deck, Ashley Flowers examines the evidence, the conflicting accounts, and the lingering question: Was Roger McCall the victim of a robbery or was his death the result of something far more personal?
