Flight Report: Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 Economy Frankfurt - New York JFK

This trip report is the start of our USA 2025 trip. One of the goals was to once again experience all the magic of the Boeing 747-400. We wanted to fly the 747-400 before their imminent retirement. For that, the only airline of choice is Lufthansa. So, for that we travelled to Frankfurt for the start of our journey. After a smooth connection through Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub, we finally come face to face with the true stars of the airport: the legendary Jumbo Jets lined up outside the terminal windows. Our aircraft for the crossing, Lufthansa’s twenty-three-year-old Boeing 747-400 D-ABTL Before boarding even begins, we get a opportunity that every aviation enthusiast dreams of. Thanks to a friendly crew, we are invited up to the flight deck to meet the pilots of the Queen of the Skies. Surrounded by switches, gauges, and decades of aviation history, the crew shares stories from their careers and their love for flying the iconic Jumbo Jet. Once onboard, we settle into our seats near the back of the cabin, where the tapering fuselage creates a surprisingly spacious seating area. As the cabin slowly fills, anticipation builds for the long-awaited departure to New York. Then comes the moment every 747 fan lives for: the deep rumble of the CF6 engines, the graceful acceleration down runway 07C, and that unmistakably smooth gentle liftoff that only the Jumbo Jet can deliver. The transatlantic crossing itself is calm and relaxing, with plenty of time to admire the aircraft from inside the cabin. After hours above the clouds, the skies finally clear over Canada, revealing the North American landscape below. Soon, Long Island appears on the horizon as we descend toward JFK Airport, completing another incredible chapter aboard one of aviation’s greatest icons.
