Japan has 9 million abandoned houses — called akiya. Most of them are empty, forgotten, and going for almost nothing. We paid $3,000 for one. This is what happened next. After moving to rural Japan in 2025, we (Jan and Yukari) tried to settle down, failed, built a campervan, survived a Japanese winter on the road, and somehow ended up buying an abandoned house in the countryside we had driven past many times. In this video we show you the first real upgrades we made — from building an outdoor roof with Yukari's carpenter father, to finally getting a not so normal flush toilet.
