Welcome to “The Last Hurrah: GCR 2025 Gala, Reunification Site Visit & Final Steam Run”, part of my ongoing series charting the progress of the Great Central Railway Reunification Project between the GCR and GCRN. In this episode we head to the Last Hurrah Gala, the final Great Central Railway gala of 2025, to enjoy a full day of steam and diesel action on this iconic preserved main line. We then travel to the northern section of the GCR (GCRN) to witness the final working day of visiting steam locomotive Carron before it begins its overhaul. It’s a significant moment for the Nottingham end of the line and a highlight for anyone following the story of heritage steam in the UK. Next, we return to Loughborough to visit the active site of the Reunification, where the ambitious factory flyover and urban viaduct will be built to reconnect the two heritage railways for the first time since the 1960s. This major engineering project will transform the Great Central Railway and plays a vital role in preserving Britain’s railway and industrial heritage.
