Chemoport! What is Chemoport? Chemoport is a small medical device, which has a chamber and a thin catheter (pipe). This device is implanted under the skin of the chest The catheter is inserted directly into the main vein of the heart (Superior Vena Cava) The entire system is called Chemoport Advantages of Chemoport: No repeated needle pricks: No need to inject the needle every time Pain-free chemo: All injections are given through this port Long-term use: It can be used safely for 2–3 years Multi-purpose: Saline, nutrition, blood — everything can be given through this Safe in breast cancer: After surgery, injections are not given on that side, in such a case Chemoport becomes very important Which patients should get Chemoport installed? Those who need 6 or more chemo cycles Those whose veins are very weak or it is difficult to insert a cannula Breast cancer patients For whom a long-term treatment plan has been made Chemoport implantation procedure: This is a minor surgical procedure It is done under general or local anaesthesia The process takes only 30–45 minutes After implantation, the patient can go home the same day Common Myths: Chemoport does not hurt It is not visible from the outside of the body – it is under the skin Injection is not given directly over it – a non-coring needle is used for this If it is managed properly, the risk of infection is very low If you or someone you know has to undergo chemotherapy and getting the cannula inserted repeatedly is painful, then definitely talk to your oncologist about Chemoport.
