Now, when an oncologist suggests chemotherapy, it's not based on personal opinions or guesswork. It’s backed by strong scientific evidence. Medical research has shown that for certain cancer types and stages, chemotherapy improves disease control, reduces chances of recurrence, and increases the chances of cure. The decision is always based on the biology and stage of the cancer. Are There Alternatives to Chemotherapy? If effective alternatives like immunotherapy or targeted therapy exist, we always discuss them with the patient. In some borderline cases, where the benefit of chemo isn’t very significant, we explain that too. The point is: chemotherapy isn’t recommended casually. It’s a decision made after deep consideration of the scientific data and patient condition. Why Some Patients Refuse Chemotherapy Still, some patients reject chemotherapy despite its proven benefits. Why does that happen? Sometimes, it's due to lack of accurate information. They might’ve seen a loved one struggle through side effects, or heard stories of unbearable suffering. But often, these stories don’t have the full picture. Many patients don’t realize that those side effects may not even have been caused by chemo, it could’ve been the cancer itself. What Actually Happens If You Skip Chemo? Let’s get to the core. If your cancer is curable, and chemotherapy is part of the treatment plan, then skipping it can reduce your chances of a complete cure. If your cancer is not curable, chemo helps control the disease for longer. So skipping it means faster progression. Why Second Opinions and Discussion Are Important? If you’ve been advised chemotherapy and you’re unsure, don’t stay silent. Discuss your concerns openly with your oncologist. Ask them to explain the pros and cons again.
