Epochs and societies also differ in their approach to existential loss—the loss of life, identity, or physical and mental integrity. In modern and especially late-modern societies, with their promise of progress, dealing with loss is characterized by additional peculiarities. Given the targeted and continuous disruptive transformation of the economy and society, which losses are even recognized as such? What is the tension between individual and collective experiences of loss? And what fault lines can be expected if the utopia of a society without loss, suffering, and grief proves unattainable?
