Andreas Reckwitz Performative and Successful Self-Realization: Paradoxes of the Late Modern Subject The late modern subject is both inwardly and outwardly oriented: On the one hand, it is shaped by a post-Romantic code of self-development and authenticity. On the other hand, it is constantly confronted with the demand to present social success, self-development, and authenticity to others and to have them certified. This "performative self-development," which particularly characterizes the lifestyles of the new middle class, is contradictory. It leads to subjective disappointments and has cultural repercussions.
