New Years Painting Resolutions, #3: Hierarchy - Wednesday, Week 48 (06/01/2021)

Day three of our 2021 Painting Resolutions! Today I'm going to emphasize Hierarchies. It may seem a bit of an abstract concept, but I choose to understand it as a simple question - when painting something, what moment or aspect grabs my attention the most? And perhaps more importantly, how do I communicate that special interest through painting? For me the best answer to these questions is often the uncomplicated one. I just further develop the areas that spark my curiosity, while making sure I evidence, in the final painting, the very many different stages that I go through in the elaboration of the painting. I love when paintings can have visible underdrawing marks, underpainting masses, broader initial layers and further developed areas, all of them speaking about our journey in the making of the painting. The way we define how to concentrate our attention on a specific area is dependent entirely on our intent. We can focus on having more contrast of value in that area, or perhaps higher saturation, maybe sharper edges, or more fully rendered details. We are very fortunate that there's no one way of highlighting something, which makes every single painting a chance to explore the possibilities of providing weight to an instance of our painting. Donations to ourpaintedlives.com of $20 or more will automatically enter you into a monthly raffle of a special daily painting all throughout 2021. http://www.ourpaintedlives.com/donations Every month, all throughout 2021, among the people that support us by purchasing our daily paintings, we will raffle a painting that I will be working on throughout the month. So if you buy a painting you automatically have a chance to get another one for free! Win/win!
