Due to the advanced stage of the fire and the risk of the lightweight structure collapsing, it quickly became clear that the building could not be saved. The fire department changed its tactics and focused entirely on protecting the adjacent buildings. The massive deployment of numerous fire hoses successfully prevented the flames from spreading. The enormous fire load from the stored bales of paper and cardboard proved particularly problematic. Additionally, the photovoltaic system installed on the roof caught fire, causing the large plume of black smoke visible from afar. Fire department spokesperson Christian Stricker confirmed that an interior attack was impossible due to the risk of collapse. Strong gusts of wind further hampered firefighting efforts, as they pushed the smoke plume close to the ground and caused a significant amount of sparks to fly. As the operation progressed, the warehouse completely collapsed. The collapsed roof considerably hampered firefighting efforts, as the smoldering embers beneath it first had to be cooled and then exposed using heavy equipment. Additional fire departments, a second turntable ladder from Leegebruch, the disaster relief unit to provide supplies for the emergency personnel, and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) with heavy clearing equipment were called in to assist. Due to the heavy smoke, a public warning was issued via the NINA warning app. Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed and to turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems. Police were also deployed in large numbers. Police spokesman Joachim Lemmel explained that the scene had to be secured and several streets closed. The B96 highway was also affected for a time. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Fire investigators will take over the investigation after the firefighting operations are completed.
