The Earth's magnetic field is one of those things we rarely think about, yet without which life would be impossible. It protects us from the solar wind, helps birds navigate, influences the operation of satellites, and even tells archaeologists the age of ancient finds. But where does it come from? Why do its poles constantly drift? And what would happen if it disappeared one day? How is it that a tiny bird, flying thousands of kilometers for the winter, "sees" a magnetic field—and what does quantum mechanics have to do with it? Why does the ocean of molten metal deep within the planet behave like a cat, occasionally reversing its polarity, as if trying to find a more comfortable position?
