Mt Barney NP - South East Inner

-- A scramble along the razorback of the SE Inner ridge -- Archive Spring 2025 : 770m outcrop - Entry Bluff - Razorback - Exit rocks - SE ridge at 1150m. Distance : The upper route is about 500m long with 400m elevation gain. Walking conditions : Mainly rock scrambling with some extreme sections. Notes : A general look at the higher part of this less-used ridge. There is still no track, but the route shows slight signs of use nowadays. The route exists in print and as a gpx file, and this video gives visual examples of the terrain involved. The lower ridge is heavily forested, but above 770m open rock scrub is present. In the rocky sections, a lot of the granophyre has formed as long smooth slabs. These slabs tend to be horizontal down lower, but at the top are tilted to the vertical : this creates an added risk of dislodging rocks on the higher route. The upper part of the ridge is a jagged, twisted razorback, which is the attraction of the route. The razorback is tricky to enter and exit, and there are images of the difficulties in the video. The upper ridge is not very safe and all precautions are best adhered to. The SE Inner shows similarities to the Mezzanine ridge - a lot of it is forested, and there is one major section of exposed scrambling. Exposure on the SE Inner is not as dangerous as on the Mezzanine razorback but nonetheless, the upper route definitely requires extreme care to negotiate. The ridge is a hard undertaking, but many of the outcrops are thrilling to climb, and the views are spectacular. The route leads on to the SE ridge, which is a much better descent route. Backburning was conducted on the lower ridge in Autumn 2026, so changes to the vegetation have occurred since these images were taken. Flowering shrub at 3.25 is the dwarf Leptospermum. N.B.
