I is for Ika part 2 | Slow Stitching with Te Reo Māori | Stitch & Spindle with Waihipi
Welcome back to Stitch and Spindle with Waihipi. In this second video celebrating the Te Reo Māori alphabet through slow stitching, the letter “I” stands for Ika (fish). If this video brought you a moment of calm, you’re welcome to support my work via Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/waihipiforage0138 Join me as I begin constructing my handmade slow-stitched Ika bag, sharing mindful textile techniques and sustainable sewing project using eco dyed fabric scraps. In this video I: ✨ Construct the fish-themed slow stitch bag by hand ✨ Add a beautiful lining made from naturally eco-dyed silk ✨ Demonstrate a hand-sewn seam technique using back stitch to reduce bulk and create a neat finish ✨ Create decorative fly stitch fish scales inspired by the textures of ika ✨ Design a simple handmade closure using lace wrapped around the bag and secured with a bead ✨reveal at the end of Baby Dragons name suggested by a viewer Anne. This project celebrates slow making, sustainability, hand embroidery, featuring eco dyed silk fabrics saved from landfill. Slow stitching allows us to pause, connect with our creativity, and honour the stories held within fabric. Through this series I explore Te Reo Māori one stitch at a time, combining mindful hand sewing with storytelling and traditional craft skills.
