Sweet Stout Recipe and Tasting - Homebrew Jar of Destiny Challenge
Our latest Jar of Destiny challenge brought us to Sweet Stout - 2015 BJCP 16A Sweet Stout had a real moment in the early days of craft beer. Left Hand Milk Stout was one of the standouts, and it likely remains one of the few true examples of the style you can still reliably find on shelves. Over time, Sweet Stout seemed to get pulled into the Americanization of beer styles. As the Hazy IPA craze took off, many stouts became sweeter, bigger, and heavier. Sweet Stout gradually morphed into Pastry Stout, packed with adjuncts and flavors like vanilla, honey, chocolate, and just about anything dessert-inspired. Pastry Stouts can be interesting, but this beer goes back to the start. This recipe is a lactose-infused stout focused on medium-high body, smooth roast, and balance. It has chocolate and roasted malt notes, backed by bread, caramel, and a soft sweetness from the lactose. That lactose adds body and smoothness without turning the beer into dessert. We really enjoyed this one. It is smooth, flavorful, and still very drinkable. Hope you try it for yourself.
