Theakston's Old Peculier, recipe research, homebrew clone served 'from the wood' but is it as nice?

🍺 Theakston's Old Peculier – Grain to Wood to Glass | Brewing a Yorkshire Legend at Wheatlow Brewery In this episode of Wheatlow Brew Days, we take on one of Britain's most famous and distinctive beers – Theakston's Old Peculier. Following our recent visit to Theakston's Brewery in Masham, North Yorkshire, and after spending time with Simon Theakston, Richard Bradbury, and ‪@euanthecooper‬ we set out to recreate this legendary old ale at home. Old Peculier is unlike almost any other British beer. Rich, ruby-dark, smooth, fruity, and full-bodied, it has been brewed in Masham for generations and remains one of the most iconic cask ales in the world. In this video we explore: 🍺 The history of Theakston's Brewery and Old Peculier 🌾 Recreating the grist using Pearl malt, crystal malts, torrified wheat and flaked maize 🍯 Using Invert Sugar No.2 in a traditional Yorkshire ale 🌿 Target, Challenger, Progress and Fuggles hops 🧪 Open fermentation with a Yorkshire yeast blend 🪵 Oak cask conditioning and the influence of wood on flavour 🔨 A traditional coopered oak cask supplied by Euan the Cooper 🍻 Side-by-side tasting against genuine Theakston's Old Peculier Along the way we discuss Yorkshire brewing traditions, creamy cask ale heads, wooden casks, open fermentation, traditional ingredients, and what makes Old Peculier such a unique beer. Did we manage to clone this famous old ale? Watch to the end for a side-by-side comparison with the real thing and find out how close we got. A huge thank you to Simon Theakston, Richard Bradbury, Mark Slater, Euan the Cooper and everyone at Theakston's Brewery for their hospitality and generosity during our visit.
