Your Ego Knows Silence Is Dangerous
Something interesting came up in our May gathering. Monica asked a question I’ve heard in many forms: she meditates, she knows it’s good, she’s had beautiful experiences in stillness — and yet there’s a part of her that simply refuses to go there. Like a kid who won’t go to bed even though they’re tired. And alongside that, she’d noticed something else: not loud, blatant thoughts during meditation, but something more like ghosts of thoughts — half-formed, wavering into existence and then dissolving again. Both of these things are, honestly, so common and so worth understanding. The half-formed thought is something I find genuinely beautiful — it’s consciousness doing what it does at the edge of stillness, like dew forming on grass when air hits a certain temperature. There’s nothing wrong with it. The frequency of thought creates a kind of wave that rises and falls, and in that liminal space, you’re not being bad at meditating. You’re watching the mind from a slightly different vantage point than usual. The resistance is a different and in some ways more interesting question. Because once we started pulling on that thread — really asking what the mind says when it argues against stillness — what emerged was a familiar pattern: the fear that something is going to be taken. That if you sit down and get quiet, you might end up face to face with something you’ve been avoiding. And that part of the ego is not willing to show up for that meeting. This is exactly where inquiry gets useful. When you start asking what it is you think you’re losing — what exactly the ego is clinging to — you’re doing the work that “the truth shall set you free” was written about. We can’t let go of what we don’t know we’re holding. And that’s not a problem; it’s actually the whole opening. 🔔 Subscribe for teachings on presence, awakening, and nondual awareness. 🌐 www.AssistTheSpirit.com - Free Zoom Gatherings each month - Free Ebook + Meditation: https://assistthespirit.com/ebook?utm... 00:00 Monica’s Two Questions 01:24 Jonathan Responds: Starting with the Second One First 01:26 Ghost Thoughts and the Wave of Consciousness 02:07 Why the Mind Isn’t Doing Anything Wrong 02:40 The TV Left On in the Background
