Watering tomatoes right down to the stem in a hole every June takes a third of the gardener's harvest and leaves the tops of the lower fruits. I'm Alexey Berezhnoy, a sixty-year gardener, and in this video I explain why tomato roots don't grow at the crown, but within a thirty-eighty-centimeter radius from the stem, and where to apply water correctly. I explain the anatomy of the root system of seedling tomatoes according to Alpatyev and the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Growing: the main mass of absorbing roots is in the ten-to-forty-centimeter layer, while fine hairs live for one to three weeks in young plots. I demonstrate four proven methods: a furrow between rows thirty to forty centimeters from the stem, a ring groove around the perimeter of the crown using Grandpa Ivan's method, a buried plastic bottle twenty-five to thirty centimeters deep, and drip irrigation for greenhouses. I'll explain why blossom-end rot isn't a disease, but a disruption of calcium transport due to inconsistent irrigation, and why in our foothills we only dig furrows across the slope.
