I'm Alexey Berezhnoy, a sixty-year gardener, and in this video I explain why, in our southern foothill soil, ash is more harmful than helpful. Ash is composed of five to twelve percent potassium, up to forty percent calcium, two to seven percent phosphorus, and zero nitrogen, plus an alkaline pH of eleven to thirteen. I explain why, in the chestnut and gray-brown soils of the south with a pH of seven to eight, ash increases alkalinity and blocks iron, boron, and manganese, and, under potatoes, it also provokes common scab at a pH above five point five. I'm showing you how to test acidity with vinegar and baking soda in a minute, weed indicators from Grandpa Ivan, application rates for different crops, and a categorical ban on mixing ash with manure, litter, urea, and herbal infusions, otherwise 30-40 percent of the nitrogen will be lost to the air as ammonia. Where you can apply ash: two hundred to three hundred grams per bush under grapes in the fall, and under cabbage, beets, and onions in acidic soil, apply a strict dose.
